License Plate Sticker Colors

Note: This is a project I've worked on and off on for a few years, detailing the colors of validation stickers used on passenger-car license plates during the last twenty years. Enjoy!

¹ Some examples of these stickers are black on white.

² Some examples of Connecticut '97 stickers are white on red:

³ Delaware uses different colors for expiration months. Colors have stayed similar from year to year since 1976:

⁴ Beginning in December 2005, newly-issued Delaware validation stickers are black on white regardless of month and year.

Stickers from December '06 to (presumably) November '10 exist in both old and new color schemes.

⁵ Some examples of Florida '01 stickers employ the same format and production methods as later stickers, and are black on yellow:

⁶ Later examples of these stickers have black characters, due to mid-year production changes.

⁷ Later examples of Iowa '97 stickers (used on the graphic base) are white on black:

⁸ Maine validation stickers used on black-on-white plates through June 1988 used different colors for each expiration month:

⁹ From the commencement of staggered registration through 1993, North Dakota stickers for December are the color of the following year's stickers.

² New Brunswick '90 stickers for expirations beyond March are white on green:

³ Northwest Territories '90 stickers for expirations beyond March are pink on white:

⁴ Nunavut existed as part of the Northwest Territories until 1999.
